Frequently Asked Questions About Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy
While our simple blend of garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and black pepper provides a fantastic foundation, feel free to get creative! Lemon pepper seasoning can add a bright, zesty note, while Creole or Cajun seasoning will give it a spicy kick. Mrs. Dash blends are also excellent for flavor without added salt. Just be cautious with any pre-made blends that contain additional salt, as your cream of chicken soup and gravy mix already provide a good amount. Too much extra salt can easily make the dish overly savory.
For an extra decadent and rich gravy, stir in a spoonful or two of sour cream or heavy cream during the last 30 minutes of cooking, or just before serving. This will thicken the sauce slightly and impart a luxurious, velvety texture and tangy depth of flavor that complements the chicken beautifully. Start with a small amount and add more until you reach your desired creaminess.
It’s completely normal for the sauce mixture to appear quite thick when you initially combine it with the raw chicken. Don’t worry, it will thin out perfectly! As the chicken cooks slowly, it releases its natural juices, which blend with the cream of chicken soup and gravy mix. This process creates a wonderfully smooth, rich, and perfectly textured gravy that coats every strand of shredded chicken. Trust the slow cooker to work its magic!
This versatile dish pairs wonderfully with a variety of classic comfort food sides. My personal favorites include fluffy mashed potatoes – whether it’s my Stovetop Mashed Potatoes or the incredibly easy Crock Pot Mashed Potatoes. Other fantastic options include a bed of white or brown rice, wide egg noodles, or even pasta. For a lighter touch, serve it alongside steamed green beans, roasted asparagus, or a simple side salad. The creamy gravy makes it a perfect companion for anything that can soak up its deliciousness!
Store any leftover Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy for Two in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, you can use the stovetop over low heat, stirring occasionally, or microwave in short intervals until heated through. This dish also freezes well; simply transfer cooled leftovers to a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

Essential Ingredients for Your Perfect Dinner for Two
Gathering your ingredients is the first step to a fantastic slow cooker meal. This recipe uses common pantry staples to create maximum flavor with minimal fuss.
- Boneless, skinless chicken breasts: Two medium-sized chicken breasts are ideal for two servings. You can easily substitute boneless, skinless chicken thighs for a richer flavor and even more tender result. If using chicken tenders, cooking time may be slightly reduced. For a dedicated thigh recipe, check out my Crock Pot Chicken Thighs & Gravy For Two.
- Garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, black pepper: This classic quartet of seasonings provides a balanced and aromatic flavor profile for the chicken. Feel free to adjust quantities to your preference or explore other spices like a pinch of cayenne for heat or a dash of dried herbs for added complexity. Lemon pepper or Cajun seasoning also make great alternatives.
- Condensed cream of chicken soup: This is the secret weapon for a creamy, savory base. A standard 10.5-ounce can works perfectly. If you prefer to make your own, try my Homemade Cream of Chicken Soup. For a different flavor twist, Cream of Mushroom Soup or even cream of celery soup can be used. For those monitoring sodium intake, low-sodium or no-sodium versions are excellent choices.
- Water: Just half a cup is needed to thin the soup and gravy mix slightly, ensuring it transforms into a smooth, pourable sauce that will cook down to the perfect gravy consistency.
- Packet of chicken gravy mix: A standard 1-ounce packet of chicken gravy mix (such as McCormick or Knorr) provides that essential rich, savory gravy flavor and helps thicken the sauce. Again, if you’re sensitive to salt, look for a low-sodium gravy mix option.

How to Make Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy for Two: A Simple Guide
Preparing this incredibly flavorful and satisfying meal is as easy as a few simple steps. Your slow cooker takes care of the rest, allowing you to focus on other things while dinner cooks itself.
Step 1: Season the Chicken
Begin by generously seasoning both sides of your boneless, skinless chicken breasts. In a small bowl, combine ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon paprika, and ¼ teaspoon black pepper. Mix these spices thoroughly, then rub the blend evenly over the chicken. This ensures every bite is infused with delicious flavor. Place the seasoned chicken breasts directly into the bottom of a 4-6 quart slow cooker.

Step 2: Prepare and Add the Creamy Gravy Sauce
In a separate large bowl, whisk together the 10.5-ounce can of condensed cream of chicken soup, ½ cup of water, and the 1-ounce packet of chicken gravy mix until smooth and well combined. This mixture forms the luscious, rich gravy base. Pour this creamy sauce evenly over the seasoned chicken in the slow cooker. Ensure the chicken is mostly submerged or well-coated. Cover your slow cooker and set it to cook on the low setting for 5-6 hours, or on the high setting for 3-4 hours. Cooking times may vary slightly depending on your slow cooker model and the thickness of your chicken breasts.

Step 3: Shred and Combine
Once the cooking time is complete, the chicken should be incredibly tender and easy to shred. Using two forks, shred the chicken directly in the slow cooker pot. It should pull apart effortlessly. After shredding, stir everything together thoroughly, making sure all the tender chicken pieces are beautifully coated in the rich, creamy gravy. This ensures every spoonful is packed with flavor.

Step 4: Serve and Enjoy!
Your Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy for Two is now ready to be enjoyed! Serve it immediately over your favorite accompaniments such as fluffy mashed potatoes, rice, or wide egg noodles. A sprinkle of fresh parsley or chives can add a touch of color and freshness. This dish is perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner or a special meal with your loved one. Prepare for an abundance of comfort and flavor!

Tips for Success & Variations
To ensure your Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy for Two turns out perfectly every time, consider these helpful tips:
- Don’t Overcook: While slow cookers are forgiving, chicken can still become dry if cooked for too long on high heat. If possible, use a meat thermometer to ensure chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- Adjust Seasoning to Taste: Taste the gravy once the chicken is cooked and shredded. You may want to add a little more black pepper, a touch of garlic powder, or even a pinch of dried thyme or sage for extra depth.
- Add Vegetables: For a more complete meal, you can add diced carrots, peas, or sliced mushrooms during the last hour of cooking. This boosts nutrition and flavor.
- Make it a Freezer Meal: This recipe is fantastic for meal prepping! You can combine the chicken and sauce ingredients in a freezer-safe bag (raw chicken + sauce mix) and freeze. Thaw overnight in the fridge before cooking in the slow cooker as usual.
